Report on project work with Drumlemble Primary School. (DPS). Classes P5,6,7. Session – 2025-26.
The aims of the project were:
- to show the significance of Medieval relics in Kintyre
- to encourage interest and knowledge within the target group
- to study the level of art and craftsmanship required to create the Medieval churches and the decorated grave slabs.
- Initial discussions with members of staff in DPS took place in May 2025.
Issues identified were:
- The lack of decorated medieval slabs in situ in the nearby medieval church of Kilkivan. These had been removed for cleaning and conservation.
- The cost to the school of suitable materials for the art and craftsmanship required work.
- The cost of transport to other Medieval sites.
We decided to look at two significant places in Kintyre:
- Campbeltown Cross. – Visited 25 Aug. 25
- Saddell Abbey. – Visited 29 Sept. 25
We applied to Laggan Community Council for grant for the school. They agreed to a sum of £1000 for art materials and transport.
Four people delivered this course:
- Elizabeth McTaggart, retired history teacher, member of the Medieval Kintyre group.
- Sheena Robertson, artist and craftswoman
- Jan Nimmo, artist, member of the Medieval Kintyre group
- Paul Barham, conservation architect.
As well as the site visits (*),we visited the classroom on five occasions.
