Press Release

The Medieval Kintyre Project continues to make commendable progress towards the conservation and consolidation of the three 12th Century church buildings at Kilkivan, Killean, and Kilchenzie, as well as their associated Medieval Carved Graveslabs. Tender documents for this significant undertaking have been submitted to Historic Environment Scotland, and we remain optimistic regarding their potential support.

We would like to acknowledge the generous contributions from local funding bodies. Recent grants include £1,000 from MOWI, £1,000 from the Kintyre Club, and £4,000 from the Campbeltown Community Windfarm Fund, all allocated for the restoration of the Kilkivan graveslabs.
Additionally, a grant of £14,500 from the West Kintyre Community Trust has facilitated the transportation of the Kilchenzie graveslabs to the workshop of Nic Boyes, Conservator of Historic Structures, located in Edinburgh.

In addition to the generous financial support already received, the Medieval Kintyre Project has also benefited from ongoing guidance provided by local heritage experts, ensuring that best conservation practices are followed throughout. Community engagement remains at the heart of the initiative, with volunteers regularly assisting in documentation and preservation efforts at each site. These collective contributions are vital in safeguarding Kintyre’s remarkable medieval legacy for future generations.
