Progress at Kintyre’s Forgotten Heritage – Press Release

stabilization work

Following the receipt of grants from Historic Environment Scotland and the Heritage Lottery fund, emergency work has gone ahead at Kilkivan, Killean & Kilchenzie Churches.

At Kilkivan, the historic wall, above the 14th/15th Century grave slabs, has been stabilised, which will permit the safe removal of these slabs for restoration. Without this work, it was quite probable that the wall would collapse this winter.

At Killean, the bracing on the walls has been renewed to stabilise the masonry and prevent uncontrolled collapses. This will permit Argyll & Bute Council to review the need for the Heras fencing, which will then be removed allowing access once again to the public.

At Kilchenzie, a voided and unstable masonry has been made safe and 14th century gravestones have been stabilised.

All the work carried out at this phase is a temporary fix to allow enough time for KKCPA/LOAF to raise funding for the major conservation work at all three churches.

To satisfy our funders for the main works, we have to plan a programme of community activities. If any group is interested in learning more, please get in touch.
